* Pricing.
Our normal web prices are the same as retail. We try to not compete with our retail stores by undercutting their prices, so our regular web prices are almost always MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price). We do, however, offer our complete line of products at KissMyFace.com while many retail stores will only carry a partial inventory of KISS products. Our price also does not include tax (unless you live in New York) so even the price of shipping is somewhat offset.

There are several reasons why you should continue to visit us on the web. We do try and offer "introductory" and other specials constantly on our web site as a means to offer our web customers a thank you and to introduce new products. We even offer FREE samples from time to time. We also offer closeout specials on out-of-season and discontinued products. And, our web visitors are the first to know about new products.

Products and Ingredients

* What is your company philosophy on animal testing?
Since our humble beginnings on an organic farm in upstate New York, Kiss My Face has not used ingredients that were tested on animals nor tested our finished products on animals.

In November 1996, Steve Byckiewicz and Bob MacLeod (the KISS founders) along with 11 other cosmetics companies participated in a press conference in New York City that launched the Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals (CSCA). The standard was created by The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) which consists of 9 animal protection associations - American Antivivisection Society, American Humane Association, Animal Protection Institute, Beauty Without Cruelty, Doris Day Animal League, Humane Society of the U.S., In Defense of Animals, New England Antivivisection Society, and PETA. According to their brochure, it is the most rigorous standard for companies to pledge their commitment to no animal testing.

By signing it, each company pledges:
1. not to conduct nor commission any animal testing of products, formulas, or ingredients, nor
2. purchase any ingredients or formulas for products from suppliers that have conducted animal tests.

By using time-tested ingredients (ones with an established history of safety), diligently reviewing raw material information, and utilizing human volunteers in clinical safety trials, no company need ever test on animals again!

If you would like to contact the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, the web email address is ccic@ix.netcom.com and the phone number is 888.546.CCIC.

* Why are the Olive Oil bar soaps different colors?
The color and odor of pure Olive Oil varies from harvest to harvest and from region to region where Olive trees grow. For this specific reason, it is not possible to have consistency of color and odor of the raw material from which this totally natural product is derived.

* I just tried your Pure Olive Olive Oil Soap, I loved it but it turned to mush in my shower. What's the deal?
Our Pure Olive Oil Soap is made of over 80% Olive Oil! There's nothing quite like it in the world. If you put it in a good draining soap dish, it'll last close to forever! Which of course makes it a pretty satisfying investment. But the bad news: if you don't put our Olive Oil Soaps in a draining soap dish – it may turn to bubblegum!

return to top* Honey ... is that the truth?
Steve & I have been vegetarians (don't eat anything with a Mother) for 23 years now. When we started Kiss My Face we decided to create products according to our own living style and standards. That included not using animal ingredients or testing any ingredient or finished product on animals.

Our farming neighbors harvest honey. We decided to use it in our wonderful "Face Scrub". And subsequently, in two other creations – our Honey Calendula Moisturizer and our Olive and Honey bar soap. The honey used is 100% natural ... not boiled or processed in any way. The honey is scented and flavored by wildflower pollen gathered by the bees from right here in New York's beautiful Hudson Valley.

There are a few people who feel that we are being deceitful by stating "no animal ingredients". The bee neither dies nor suffers in providing us with its honey, and the bee's by-product quite frankly is not the "animal" we had in mind while making our "no animal ingredients" statement. I don't believe for a moment that every KISS user will agree with my thoughts on the subject, but I do hope they'll enjoy the pleasures of the 98% of our products that do not contain honey.

* I keep hearing scary things about the ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. What Kiss My Face products contain it?
There's a wild amount of buzz on the web these days regarding SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE . Many of the sites devoted to the subject are sponsored or written by folks toting their own products. Our comments here are an effort to neither defend nor commend the ingredient. At this moment we are carefully reviewing and researching data. Presently we use the ingredient in some of our "rinse-off" products (as opposed to a lotion that you would leave on) At KISS MY FACE most of us have kids, we're all pretty health conscious, a lot of us are vegetarians, and of course, we all use our own products, Naturally, we're every bit as concerned as you are with what we put on and in our bodies. We're certainly not married to any particular ingredient and in fact we're constantly tweeking our products in an effort to make them better.

From the research we've done to date it would appear there is a great deal of misinformation literally screaming from sites. We'll certainly keep you posted (via this site) with the results of our evaluation. Meanwhile please look into the issue with some thoroughness. Note who's writing the info and please demand to know what "studies" these sites are referring to. If you have some substantiated info (NOT hearsay), please do share it with us. One that appears to offer an interesting and rational view is at www.snopes.com/toxins/shampoo.htm. Check it out.
Through hard work and extraordinary value we have developed an enviable and dedicated following. We've earned your trust and we value it enormously. We share your concerns for healthful products and will continue to provide you with the best quality, the best price and the most effective products we possibly can. Know that you can use all KISS MY FACE products with confidence.

* Is it true that the ingredient DEA can cause health problems?
Earlier this year, on CBS's Morning News Today, Samuel S Epstein, M.D., Professor of Environmental Health at The University of Illinois spoke of a recent study on DEA. Dr. Epstein concluded that DEA is carcinogenic.

On March 25, 1998, The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, a scientific body of seven distinguished scientists who quarterly review scientific data on cosmetic ingredients and issue reports, examined the research. They determined that DEA & DEA condensates were safe at the levels usually used in "rinse off" cosmetic products which is less than the 10% level allowed in "leave on" products. They will continue to monitor and review the data. New studies have been proposed to further understand the effects of DEA. The FDA's Office of Cosmetics Fact Sheet for February 1998, issued the following: "The Agency believes that at the present time there is no reason for consumers to be alarmed based on the usage of these ingredients in cosmetics."

After reading the study that Dr. Epstein quoted and reviewing the many articles that appeared after the news program, we learned: The study was composed of several parts: a 14 week study and a 2 year study. Both utilized mice and rats. In the male rats there was no evidence of carcinogenic response; in the female rats there was equivocal evidence and in the mice there was clear evidence.

Questions raised by those evaluating the study:

Were the strains of mice and rats predisposed to cancer?

The DEA and DEA condensates were administered in ethanol. Could the ethanol be the carcinogenic substance rather than the DEA?

Since the DEA and DEA condensates in ethanol were administered directly to the skin in varying amounts-50, 100, 200, and 400 mg in ethanol, it is unlikely that DEA and DEA condensates in "rinse" off cosmetics could penetrate the skin the same as a direct application and become concentrated in the same levels.

KISS MY FACE only uses low level DEA condensates, not DEA alone, and only in rinse-off products. We will continue to vigilantly monitor the information. Meanwhile, our chemists are searching substitutes that are the most safe, effective and as natural as possible.
